analysis)
After the
enormous successes of the 80's generation (including the 1990 world cup),
Cameroon's football had been marred by administration problems and a decline
on all levels, facilities, youth teams etc. This development had been the
parallel to problems of Africa in general, had taken place despite the
success of individual players in Europe and had finally produced poor results
in all competitions.
But the Cameroon team
are not called 'escapologists' for nothing. Despite the 1998/2000 team
can hardly be already fruits of more constructive policy, it looks extremely
promising and is again one of the candidates to qualify for the World Cup
2002. The Europe based players gather from time to time in Europe to practise,
according to the role model of Angola.
The team has similar
strengths and weaknesses like Ghana. Quite well organized, and extremely
strong in one-to one situations, they lack a little in cooperational and
constructive passing game like for example the Netherlands or some North
Africans have developed.
Cameroon might face
a disappointment in result at this Nations Cup, not because they lack quality
but because they face an extremely tough task. After Ghana in the tournament
opening match, Cameroon might face a second host team. Depending on which schedule
is the right one (they are two different schedules circeling around), Nigeria could be the opponents in a
possible final or semi-final at Lagos. They
even could face a second clash with hosts Ghana in the semi-finals or otherwise
a meet-again at Lagos is also possible.
Already the first
round with the possibly strong Ivorians will be a rough task.
