Morocco
Morocco had been
a better team against European opponents than against Africans in the years
before and they confirmed this impression in this tournament.
In the end Morocco's players
and coach received an undeserved abuse for failing by a half goal in a
group that was clear to be a 'group of death' for one the three giants
(Nigeria, Tunisia, Morocco) in it.
In the aftermath of the
tournament Henri Michel had to go and the long term build up for World
Cup 2002 became severly damaged.
It clearly looked like Morocco
did not feel at home at this tournament but the troubles they had against
Congo were not different than the trouble Nigeria or Tunisia had to beat
that hard working Central African team.
In the end it came down
to a showdown against hosts Nigeria who were in a must win situation and
were able to decide the match by the big play potential of their stars. |
