World Cup 2002 - African qualification - match report
Libya - Togo  Feb 23 2001 1400 GMT
1st half:
- strange first 30 minutes saw only a handful of chances but they were all goals:
- a handball penalty, converted by #14,  after 11 minutes brought the 1:0
- a long throw in from the left hand side caught the Libyan defence sleeping and it was easy for Togo to score the equaliser from close range ('21)
- not much better looked the Togolese defence, when speculating offside at a cross from the right hand side - it wasn't and Libya #10 made it look easy - 2:1 ('25)
- ('30) Togolese #8 answered with a direct shot after a cross from the right hand side from about 5 meters, this time the player was not unmarked but not challenged tight enough anyway - 2:2
- ('32) a good save by the Togoles keeper - much space in midfield had enabled the Libyans to combinate through into the Togolese penalty area
- ('43) a good opportunity for Togo after a counter attack but the 16 m shot goes across the bar
halftime 2:2
- although both teams tried to win the match, only half chances on both sides until late in the half
- ('75) good foot save by the Togolese keeper against a low diagonal shot from half left when Libyan #10 had penetrated the penalty area by a fine move
- ('78) for a moment it looked like men against boys when Togo took the ball away from Libyan #14 close to his own goal and after a defended cross a simple one-two made the Libyan defenders look like moving in slowmotion - a shot from a difficult angle eventually found the goal while some of the defence seemed distracted by what looked like a foul against a defender off the ball:  2:3 - a good looking goal but against an unconcentrated defence
- ('79) it did not take long for both to look into the mirror of this situation on the other side: the Togolese defenders became similarly surprised by a long ball on  Libyan #10 who came  running along the right hand side and scored from similar difficult angle right away - 3:3
- ('82) a good opportunity for Libyan #17 with free lane to the goal he only accomplishes a harmless shot from 12 meters
- both know they will have to win this match for any theories but not more than a Togolese header happens in what rather can be described as a good test match for both African Nations Cup campaigns:
final score 3:3
with one point from three matches and considered the strength it seems a very unlikely scenario one of those two could catch up with Cameroon
