Burkina Faso - Senegal

Before the match:
Interesting match.
Experts are not to sure about the level of both teams yet.
Senegal after some years of absence return with good results during the last two years. They seem quite confident and in a group with a lot of teams not sure about their form they see a realistic opportunity to reach the quarter finals.
Burkina Faso had been a surprise fourth in the tournament 1998, but that was played at Burkina Faso. To the surprise of many the selection of the poor country has maintained some of the form, although the squad will contain many newcomers. Among them a bunch of yet teenagers (but not in defence), of which 4 will be in the beginning squad. Not the ones from their successful under 17 side, but those have proofed that the new breeds from West African football-schools will make impact in the future. Their potential has dramatically increased during the 90's, will they be able to form a stabile unit to surprise? Watch out for #10 Mamadou Zongo. Already two years ago he had been predicted a future star, but surprisingly left out by Troussier for the 1998 squad. Today, 19, he plays for Vitesse Arnheim (Netherlands).

1st half:
-('4) diagonal ball into the Burkinabé penalty area and from the half right a player (#13 Ousmane Diop?) scores into the left corner with a hopping ball - 0:1
-('8) First Burkinabé ball in the direction of the Senegalese goal, a header wide
-('12) A dangerous ball control error of a Senegalese defender but another one helps out.
Senegal has drawn back and looks to create room for counter attacks. Burkina Faso seems capable nevertheless to create opportunities nevertheless. A second goal seems likely, leaving open on which side.
-('22) Burkina Faso: Header wide
-('23) Burkina Faso: A #10 Zongo corner and the Senegalese keeper makes a brilliant save against a close range shot by #6 Korbeogo (a Burkina Faso based defender)
-('33) Senegal: Flying save by the Burkinabé keeper against a header
A number of corners seem to disclose: both defences have problems with high balls
-('35) Another BFA header wide
-('39) A must goal for Senegal: A high free kick into the box from right wing finds a player all alone 6 meters to the goal, but he can't get off a proper header, so that the keeper gets hold of the ball
-('44) Senegal: A very good and very fast counter attack, but finally a player (#20) goes unsuccessfully for a penalty
-('injury time) free kick for Senegal 23 meters beautifully executed into the left corner (from the scorers view), by #17 Papa Sarr ? (the numbers are difficult to read) - 0:2

Halftime - 0:2
The goals came at very inconvinient moments for the Burkinabé psyche. In between the match was rather balanced. Both teams with conspicious defence problems against flying balls and a considerable number of corners. Can Burkina Faso bounce back? A question of attitude of both squads after the halftime break. The ground does not seem to be a carpet.

Looking for a halftime snack? Want to create some restaurant atmosphere?

2nd half:
-('52) Senegal: BFA has more and more problems with the fast strikers. A free kick from the right leads after a bouncing ball to a dangerous distance shot, missing close. Referee says, Goalkeeper had hands on ball, too.
-('57) Senegal: More problems for the Burkinabé defence
-(''57) Burkina Faso: In the counterattack Zongo sets up a fine distance shot.
-(''59) Burkina Faso: spectacular overhead kick (#19?) after corner, scratched from the line. The crowd now behind the outsiders
-(''64) Senegal: The conspicious #7, 22 year old Henri Camara, dangerous from the right but keeper denies
-(''66) Burkina Faso: A lack of concentration of Senegal allows a Burkinabé player to breakthrough on the left ground line and set up Sanou scoring from 8 meters into the right corner - 1:2
-('71) A fine played counter attack by Senegal and a spectacular save by the Burkinabé keeper.
The crowd seems to love the match. Much more noise than at Egypt-Zambia. They are cheering the Burkinabé actions, but Senegal looks stronger now.
-'('79) BFA: #7Koudou, after a fine trick a minute before, receives big cheers when substituted
Burkina Faso is trying with some pleasing ground game now, but get stopped by concentrated defenders. The high balls had been more effective?
-('87) Senegal: A deflected shot (by an own player) from 20 meters leaves the keeper without chance. #11, Salif Keita, a asecond half substitute is announced as the scorer. - 1:3
-('89) Senegal: more problems now for the Burkinabé who have to recover from the shock
-('injury time) The Burkinabé attackers do not give up, but then it' over

Final result - 1:3
In the better position after the halftime lead, Senegal played on concentrated and successfully conserved the advantage. The Burkinabé after weak 15 minutes fought fired up by the crowd but did not have enough impact to turn it around.
They will play Zambia next - a welcome opportunity against another team shaking up. Senegal faces the unpleasant task against the Egyptian concrete.
