Kickoff 1500 GMT African Supercup
Raja Casablanca (MOR) - Africa Sport (CIV) 2:0 (final)

March 5th, the Sunday of the African club Supercup
The Champions League winners 1999 Raja Casablanca (Morocco) host the winners of the Cup Winners Cup, Africa Sports (Côte d'Ivoire)

A huge club match for Africa, more meaningful than the equivalent in Europe. It is traditionally played in one leg only with the home advantage to the Champions Legaue winner. It has already seen a lot of close matches including penalty shoot-outs. Last years match already has become a legend: It saw the first appearance of the ASEC Abidjan teen stars*, sensationally beating Esperance Tunis after extra-time.
(*=the Champions League winner team from 1998 has been completely replaced by a youth group from the club associated football school)
This years match-up:

Raja Casablanca represented Africa in the World Club Championship in January and performed well despite losing all three matches. Especially the exciting Real Madrid encounter has impressed many.

Africa Sports is one of the two big clubs of Côte d'Ivoire. From this country arguably come the strongest clubs of Western and Central Africa at these days.

A problem for them might be that the Ivorian season like the African is running over the year and has just had its break while Morocco is right in the middle of its season

They have lost at least one of the two conspicious Keita brothers to Europe (St.Etienne?), two young and technically flamboyant players running the attack of the Ivorian champions and winners of the African Cup Winners Cup 1999. But the club has just signed the legendary Nigerian striker Rashidi Yekini, who already played for the club before trying his luck outside West Africa.

1st half:
-('5) beautiful counter-attack by Raja, player on the right wing runs down to the ground line with the ball and centers it into the back to the defenders running with him. Where another player heads it towards the goal, missing close - keeper had no chance
-('7) Africa Sport answers with a free kick rocket across the bar
-('13) Big opportunity for Raja, when attackers have the superority in the air after a cross but cannot get the ball across the line
-('14) On the counter-attack Africa Sports plays out the defence but the eventual shot only hits the outside of the net
Up to here the match is completely open and nice to watch
-('20) the last five minutes have become much more boring to watch as players start to lose concentration and number of errors grows (without resulting chances from it)
-('30) opportunity for Raja when Ivorian keeper comes out of the goal for a long cross and crashes against a Raja attacker but a second Casablanca player cannot convert the loose ball from about 18 meters. It looked a bit like a foul but it also was outside the (6-yard-)box. Keeper stays down injured and is treated for minutes.
Africa Sport is coached by Yeo Martial. He was the coach of the Côte d'Ivoire team that won the African Nations Cup 1992. But like every other coach of the National team he did not stay in the job for a second Nations Cup.
('35) Half chance for Africa Sport after a good looking combination
Ivorian players strong in one against one situations
('39) Big counter opportunity for Africa Sport ends in a harmless header direct to the body of the keeper (Chidli)
('injury time) Raja Casablanca with a huge counter-attack: First almost an own-goal by the keeper fisting a cross towards his own net, scratched off the line by a defender, the loose ball opens up a big opportunity for a Raja player to score but he hits a fellow attacker

Halftime 0:0
A match, quite lively for 15 minutes, then lost some quality. Both teams equally strong. Maybe the Ivorians look like they have an edge in potential but Raja therefore has the advantage when it comes to situations direct in front of the two goals.

2nd half:
-('50) Raja keeper Chidli rescues when a missed tackle by a defender allows a one against the keeper situation for an Africa Sport attacker
-('52) A more lively Raja team wakes up the crowd and creates a dangerous situation after Ivorians lose the ball in midfield
-('53) Africa Sport answers with a longe range attempt
-('54) Raja: a through ball into the penalty area, between to defenders, sets a player free who chips it over the coming out keeper - 1:0
-('56) Raja: another fast break attack by Raja Casablanca but the strike misses the goal
-('60) After Raja created some more danger, Africa Sport suddenly is able to put some pressure on temporarily nervous defenders
the field is stretched now what fits well with the fast counter play by Raja
-('71) an error in Raja build up allows Africa Sport a big opportunity: and they score a goal but the player is offside - does not count
-('73) Raja: dangerous 20 meter low shot misses close
-('76) another build up error, this time by Africa Sports - resulting in a big header opportunity by Raja but again off target
-('79) Raja conquer a ball in midfield, this time it is a shot from 16 meters which goes wide
-('85) Raja: sensational solorun by #15 inside the Ivorian penalty area against a bunch of defenders, evntually without any harm
-('86) good save by Chidli angainst a more promising Africa Sports attack
-('88) counter attack decides the match: #14 (Kharbouch?) escapes a pressure situation in own half, a long ball to midfield where a player takes it and storms down the left wing to the ground line, a cross ball on #9 who heads it against the moving direction of the keeper into the corner of the net - 2:0
-('injury time) Raja: another counter attack almost brings the third goal but keeper can save
-('injury time) Raja: and another one, this time all defence is played out but the final chip goes wide

Final result 2:0
Raja Casablanca won the Supercup after gearing up in the second half. Their trademark in African internationals: opponents score no goals.
For Africa Sport it might have been too early in the season
