World Cup 2002 - African qualification - match report
Tunisia - DR Congo  Feb 25 1400 GMT
1st half:
- Tunisia in white, DR Congo in yellow shirts, blue shorts
- ('1) Tunisia only needs seconds for their first opportunity when the Congolese keeper misses a cross
- the steamrolling start brings more half chances and a mediocre attempt by Baya to get a penalty
- ('6) DR Congo cannot stop the inspired combinating Tunisians but by some miracle #12 does not shoot the ball into the goal but wide
- ('8) a fine combination along the right hand side involving Gabsi sets free Zitouni who scores by a diagonal low shot - the seemingly inevitable 1:0
- ('12) Jaidi fires across the bar from tight angle after a high free kick cross by Kanzari
- ('14) Double opportunitiies for Tunisia after crosses from right and left, the eventual Zitouni header curves over the bar
- there are always free spaces only occupied by the Tunisians into which they play - this makes their precise combinations fast and easy
- ('18) good save against a Jaidi header by the Congolese keeper
- half chances for Tunisia follow
- ('27) a harmless looking situation but sluggish defending makes it possible for Jaziri to unleash a diagonal shot although challenged by a defender, the shot beats the keeper and hits the inside of the net exactly at the second goal post - 2:0
- ('29) clumsy challenge aginst Jaziri - penalty
- ('30) Kanzari into the left corner - although the keeper had opted for that corner he has no chance - 3:0
- the Tunisian appetite has been satisfied and for the remaining minuzes of the half it is a midfield affair
halftime 3:0
ball possession: 64:36, shots 13:1, is this the DR Congo alternative to the official withdrawl of their Congolese brothers?
2nd half:
- ('46) DR Congo surprise the Tunisians by a quick attack and almost score - a defender scratches the ball off the line in the last moment
- ('47) a quickly executed free kick lets the Congolese look like schoolboys but the Tunisians seem surprised themselves by the sudden opportunity
- ('51) DR Congo work out a huge opportunity but Jaidi can disturb the striker (#18?) who then shoots over the empty goal from 3 meter distance
- opportunities for Tunisia ('53, '56, '58, '60, '63)
- ('64) #5 is sent through and this time scores against the keeper - 4:0
- ('68) two Tunisians are alone with the ball against the keeper and do not score
- ('74) El Ouaer almost gets surprised by his own defender
- opportunities for DR Congo ('81), Tunisia ('82)
- ('84) penalty for DR Congo after a counter attack - El Ouaer saves
- ('86) beautiful Tunisian goal against a demoralised and non defending defence - 5:0
- opportunities for Tunisia ('89 and 'injury time), DR Congo ('89)
- ('injury time) Zitouni wipes it in after the keeper had saved a first attempt - 6:0
- ('injury time) a last huge opportunity for DR Congo but they cannot get the ball across the line
final score 6:0
thorough and extensive preperation at France vs improvisation because of the troubled Congolese situation 6:0, professional  determination against let's see what comes tourism 6:0, team with a real vision to qualify vs. a team that  was just the opposite to the great Senegalese group C performance yesterday 6:0, do the World Cup qualifiers get an unserious touch because there are too many teams in the groups? (1 out of 5 means: many teams are out of the race early, but still have influence by the different attitude they go into the games).  This all can hardly be possible: before this match DR Congo had not been out of the race and theoretically with all home matches pending they still have a slim chance. But judged from that perfomance - no way.
