Before the match:
A thrilling race bewtween
Tunisia and Côte d'Ivoire for the place at Japan/Korea 2002. It will
be decided either by a slip up of one of the two or by goal difference.
On the background of the
story of strange pull-outs and pull-back-ins by the Congolese this leaves
with an additional uncomfortable feeling. When the race is decided on goal
difference it will be in the remaining matches against teams who have nothing
to play for and where it is unclear which opponent will arrive in
what composition and with what attitude.
But weekend could as well
see a possible change of scenario as the two teams have uncomfortable and
difficult to predict tasks away from home in central Africa. Tunisia may
have an a bit more difficult match here at the bigger of the two
Congos.
1st half:
-DR Congo in yellow socks,
blue shorts, yellow shirts, Tunisia in white
-('2) The Congolese are
off to a quick start and have two opportunities, one offside, the next
one more threatening
-('4) the Congolese offside
trap seems to have failed and Tunisia blow a good opportunity by firing
wide.
-('8) Tunisia: huge solorun
by Jaziri but his final pass is intercepted
-('12) after problems in
the beginning Tunisia now dominate the game
-('15) cross from the
right and it seems to be Khaled Badra, who has scored by a header
into the right corner - 0:1
-('21) the Congolese keeper
misses a cross but the Tunisian header is not on target
-('23) the first attempt
on goal by the Congolese since the beginning, no problem for the tUnisian
keeper (not El Ouaer, he is injured)
-('24) a deflected Congolese
long range shot becomes very dangerous and forces the Tunisian keeper to
a very good save
-('26) another dangerous
Congolese attempt, narrowly wide
-('33) Tunisia waste a good
counter situation
-('35) Tunisia: dangerous
pair of corner kicks, the Congolese defence with problems
-('42) Congolese #16 has
a good opportunity out of the blue but his attempt is off target
-('44) clumsy tackle and
Tunisian attacker Zitouni falls probably already inside the penalty area,
but the referee says no foul
halftime 0:1
2nd half:
-after a very long intermission
the match restarts, now Tunisia will know the result of the parallel match
before the end
-('47) a Congolese siege
of the Tunisian goal ends with one of the several offside calls against
the 'Simbas'
-('51) Tunisian counter
attack against an exposed defence, a cross from the right (Zitouni?) and
Zoubeir Baya heads it into the corner - 0:2
-('54) corner for Congo,
quick Tunisian counter, Baya sees the keeper some in front of his goal,
he shoots from 50 meters and scores a sensational goal - 0:3
-('57) the Congolese attack
but the Tunisians are fired up and confident now and their counters
are getting more and more dangerous
-('60) Tunisan header after
corner, unchallenged, but into the arms of the keeper, answered by a quick
and dangerous Congolese counter attack
-the Congolese are trying
to attack to make this result look a bit more pleasing, but there is a
lack of coordination and game design, especially now they are too hectical.
Also very good defensive work by Tunisia who look topfit, running very
much.
-only 15 minutes left
for Côte d'Ivoire to score in the parallel match -otherwise Tunisia
will be qualified
-('77) Tunisia after corner:
across the bar from close range
-2 goals in short time
in the last 10 minutes at Pointe Noire: 1:1, the Ivorians took the lead
but Congo got a penalty 2 minutes later
-match finished at Point-Noire
- 1:1
-('injury time) Tunisians,
controlling the game, with a last happy counter attack
final score 0:3:
Tunisia are the third African
country to have qualified for the Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup. Congo have
been the trouble for the Ivorians throughout the qualification, pull-out,
pull-back-in, and now spoiling the Ivorian chance.
