Before the match
Senegal must beat Morocco
to stay in the race for a place at the World Cup 2002. Only if they do
so also Egypt will have a chance, too. Senegal have to overcome any regrets
of bad luck in recent matches, and the shock result Egypt has provided
yesterday, and possible physical and coherence problems caused by the schedule:
In contrary to Morocco (and Egypt) Senegal had been idle a fortnight ago
and the qualifiers collide with the preparation and holiday rhythms of
the European clubs the Senegales players are playing at.
For Morocco the receipe
is easy: not lose their last match at Senegal. This means secure qualification.
Anything else would leave them paralysed watching in front of their TV's
on the last weekend of the qualifiers when they then will need Senegal
and Egypt to fail in their away matches at Namibia and Algeria.
1st half:
-Senegal seem to have to
play without Fadiga, they are in white, Morocco in green
-('2) Senegal start nervously
-('2) tension brakes out
after a first foul by Morocco, a yellow card is shown to Senegalese captain
Cissé after the match has been interrupted one minute
-('4) it seems to have helped
the hosts, they pay a first visit to the Moroccan penalty area
-('5) Morocco counter, ends
with a pathetic dive by Ramzi
-('5) Senegal answer immediately
but the deflected cross is controlled by the Moroccan keeper
-one might have expected
a more careful beginning but both teams look sharp in attack
-(11) the match has become
less dramatic as the defensiv lines have organised now
-Senegal operate with
some long and/or wide balls
-Morocco basically operate
from a crowded defence, but when the ball is in the Senegalese half they
agressively pressure the build-up with a good number of attackers and so
cause problems to the West Africans
-('18) Senegal conquer
the ball inthe Moroccan half, a fine play along the right wing, a low cross
against the run of the defence and El Hadj Diouf scores by a direct low
shot from 12 m - 1:0
-('20) yellow card for a
rough foul from behind with the ball far gone by a Moroccan player, might
have been close to red, a clear frustration foul
-('22) the crowd is in ecstasy
and Senegal dominate at the moment
-('27) Senegal: good looking
25 m volley but directly into the arms of the keeper
-the match is of good
quality and quite errorfree (the ground looks a bit bumpy) though there
are only few goal scenes
-('31) Morocco: chance after
a free kick cross from the right hand side, a #9 Camacho header finds a
second attacker unmarked, but the keeper thrwos himself into the way to
the goal and grabs his attempt
-('39) Senegal: dangerous
header after a free kick cross from the right but the Moroccan keeper makes
a very good save, diving into the corner and seizing the ball
-('36) Morocco dangerous
at a set play again: this time it is a (obviously practiced) throw in,
played on and finding Chippo unmarked but he fires across the bar, biggest
chance for Morocco yet
-both keepers look good
yet
-('38) Senegalese spoil
a promising attack by an offside position
-('39) Morocco with another
dangerous opportunity: Ramzi breaks through on the right, delivers a cross,
but the keeper manages to deflect it and when Hadji can eventually fire,
the keeper and a defender are in the way to the goal and can prevent from
a score
-('injury time) Senegalese
free kick from the left hand side: the expected cross turns to a shot and
misses wide right but seemingly close
-('injury time) it is Ramzi
again who sets up some havoc inside the Senegalese defence but in the end
it is the keeper who plucks down the ball successfully
halftime 1:0
2nd half:
-('47) Hadji tries from
half left, but wide, the Senegalese look unconcentrated
-match is going up and
down now, losing some quality but gaining suspense
-('57) Bassir comes in for
Camacho (Hadda)
-('58) El Hdj Diouf complains
a lot - here about shirt pulling
-('61) after a Senegalese
corner Morocco run a counter with a lot of players and catch the Senegalese
disorganised, but the attack fades without effect
-(''62) Ramzi (Morocco)
makes a rough fould and some provocations cause yellow cards at least for
one player of both teams
-('64) Senegal: Moussa N'daye
with a solo and a dangerous shot, saved but not seized and a huge second
chance for Camara, denied by a brilliant save of teh Moroccan keeper. Best
opportunity for Senegal since the goal.
-('64) Morocco answer wwith
an immediate counter attack
-('66) Morocco counter is
stopped by the keeper who intercepts a cross in a dangerous looking situation
-Ramzi is now causing
problems for the Senegalese on the Moroccan left hand side
-('69) Senegal: Camara is
through but his attempt, half cross, half shot is too weak and intercepted
-(''74) yellow card for
Naybet, he has stopped the broken through El Hadj Diouf by wrestling him
down
-('74) Hadji is replaced
by Hassan Nader
-('75) indirectly played
free kick and dangerous shot by Moussa N'daye, very good save by the keeper
-('76) Moroccan keeper stops
a dangegerous through ball for a corner
-('78) great save by the
Moroccan keeper against a Camara? header
-Senegal look to decide
the match
-('80) now it is Morocco
again pressuring, the fighting becomes desperate
-('83) almost a Senegalese
opportunity
-it is a nervous fight
now, with some uncontrolled tackles
-('85) Morocco long range
attempt, no problem for the keeper
-it is a thrilling match,
especially with this much at stake, with a lot of almost... attacks
-('87) Senegalese counter
and El Hadj Diouf's header misses the empty goal
-no more chances, Morocco
trying but Senegalese keep control
final score 1:0
What a group: all three,
Senegal, Egypt, and Morocco have beaten each other once 1:0, and drawn
with each other once 0:0. The decision will be made in the matches against
the unpredictable resistances of Namibia and Algeria in a group that will
most likely end on goal difference.
