World Cup 2002
- African qualification - week1 match report
Namibia
- Morocco June
17 1400 GMT
before the match:
In the probably toughest
group anything can happen. Though Morocco and Egypt are favorites, depending
on the outcome of matches, Algeria and dark horse Senegal could become
a surprise.
Morocco plays at Namibia.
It could become very important in the end not to lose any points here.
But Morocco is missing a number of regular players. Alsdo they have to
overcome the 1:5 shock defeat against France, that has casts doubts over
the idea of building up a new team.
For Namibia Tjikuzu, one
of the regularly playing Africans in German Bundesliga (Werder Bremen),
plays with Number 10.
The stadium shows a lot
of empty seats.
line-up:
Namibia: 1 Tlhabanelo, 4
Ouseb, 3 Tom, 5 Ndjambari, 7 Benjamin, 15 Hindjou (c), 8 Jacobs, 17 Nauseb,
10 Tjikuzu, 14 van Wyk, 18 Hummel
Morocco: 1 Gassi, 15 Abrami
(c), 16 Bencherifa, 5 El Kaokouri, 6 Sellami, 3 Mariana, 18 Safri, 7 El
Assas, 8 Hdioudad, 11 El Moubarki, 14 Bassir
1st half:
-('2) Morocco: A dangerous
free kick cross from the right side brings some danger for the Namibian
defence.
-('20) Morocco, playing
out of a solid defence in a quite slow match, suddenly has a breakthrough
on a counter-attack but the Namibian keeper can deflect the ball for a
corner
-('24) Suddenly a huge gap
in the Morocco defence, but a Namibian attacker, unmarked, cannot beat
the keeper from 10 meters
-('27) Namibia: A through
ball catches the Morocco defence sleeping again, and it is #14? who hits
the cross-bar from 14 meters, the ball bounces back down to the ground
and nobody can profit from the loose ball
-the match has become
much quicker now, and Namibia obviously has gained confidence, they start
to believe they can beat this team from Morocco
-('33) Namibia: another
opportunity, Namibia causes danger using the right wing now
-('36) Morocco: the first
time since long ago, that Morocco threatens the goal of the hosts
-Namibia works with an
offside trap. Yet it has worked well but it is always a risk.
-the rest of the half
the match is more even, with a half chance on each side
halftime: 0:0
Namibia surprises with a
good prformance, few errors and some inspired attacks. Morocco tries to
play out of a solid defence, look like they might score on one of the counter
attacks but have to many gaps in defence. They look vulnerable when Namibia
comes along the right hand attacking side. Morocco has had a little more
ball possession but Namibia the bigger number of promising goal scenes
2nd half:
-Morocco: #14 Bassir is
replaced by #9 Hadda?
-('47) Namibia: The Morocco
defence is almost surprised again by an early quick attack but a defender
can put his foot in in the last moment. A couple of corners following do
no harm.
-('56) Namibia: huge opportunity
after a corne, #14 van Wyk misses from close range narrowly
-many corners for Namibia
in thes first minutes odf the second half
-('59) Morocco: after a
corner had been cleared, a distant shot attempt by #5 wide
-('63) Morocco with another
half chance but th 16 meter shot is easily saved
-('71) Namibia: promising
attack along the left hand side, good cross but an unprecise header
-still very concentrated
defending by the Namibians
-('77) Morocco: through
ball by #9 on #8, running all alone towards the keeper, but he is whistled
offside
-a few more errors occur
now in build up as the teams gets more tired, Morocco seems to have a little
more reserves
-('80) a dog on the field
interrupts the match, it is very fast and looks uncatchable. it seems to
want to talk top the Morocco coach be Kasperczak is not interested, the
scene lasts almost 3 minutes
-('83) the match continues
with half chances on both sides, the break seems to have helped Namibia
refocus
-('86) Morocco: a deflected
pass suddenly opens up a big opportunity for #13? but from a difficult
angle he only hits the outside of the net
-('88) Morocco: huge opportunity
on a break through but the attacker is stopped in the last moment by the
Namibian keeper
-('90) the dog interrupts
the match again for some seconds
-Namibia attacking, but
Morocco now with more space for counter attacks, both seeking the goal
-('injury time) half chances
for both, attacking attempts by Namibia, offside trap against Morocco counter
attacks, a seesaw match but no clearcut chances
-('injury time) Namibia
almost plays out the Morocco defence, but a pass too much, eventually a
Jacobs shot misses close
final result: 0:0
A quite even match with
Namibia making the better impression. Was it just bad luck for Morocco
because of injuries or will the self destruction of the team that had won
so many fans 1998, and that has taken place after the African Cup Of Nations
2000, end in a surprising absence from World Cup 2002? It is much too early
to speculate... |
