Before the match
Yet none of the three leaders
of the group has worked out a substancial advantage but after the Moroccan
victory at Algiers on Friday the psychological pressure is mounting on
Senegal and especially Egypt to keep the pace. Before this crucial match
Hossam Hassan, who cannot play today because of injury, is honored by FIFA
president Blatter for his world record of national team appearances.
1st half
-Egypt in white stockings,
white shorts, and red shirts, Senegal in green-green-white
-('2) Senegal begin confident,
trying to suffocate the Egyptian game right away by tight pressing all
over the field
-('4) but Egypt has the
first opportunity when the Senegalese keeper, himself under pressure, mispasses
the ball to an Egyptian, who then 25 meter central to the goal is fouled
for a free kick
-('5) the beautiful free
kick by #10 Sabry misses only by centimeters
-('8) Senegal look strong
and combinate through into the penalty area where El Hadj Diouf is seprived
of the ball by a defenders leg just before scoring
-('10) Egypt: a through
ball on an Egyptian attacker at the right hand side, the keeper has left
his goal, a mistake. But the angle is too tight and the lob misses the
goal while it is too close to the goal to be reached by another attacker
-('13) Senegal: long range
shot, wide
-('16) the referee rewards
a strange free kick to Egypt from the left hand side. They play an unexpected
short pass, then a dangerous cross, but it misses all attackers and goes
out
-('18) similarly dangerous
free kick on the other side but no harm
-('20) Egypt with a half
chance
-('21) dangerous Senegal
counter attack (Camara?), defenders can obstruct the way to the goal and
it's only a corner
-('27) huge opportunity
for Egypt as the keeper deflects a long range Sabry shot into the path
of an opportunistic Egyptian attacker who hits the goalpost from an outside
angle, a very close scene. In two immediately successing scenes the keeper
has problems with dangerous crosses.
-('32) a promising Senegalese
attack is stopped by an inexplicalble referee call
-('38) A diagonal through
ball on El Hadj Diopuf sets up a huge opportunity for Senegal. .After his
side pass is already intercepted it slips through the defenders legs and
a striker, possibly Fadiga immediately fires, the shot beeats the keeper
but a defender scratches it off the line
-('41) the game of the Senegalese
keeper has stabilised.
-('42) Senegal Fadiga fires
across the bar from more than 20 meters
-('injury time) the Senegalese
keeper drops another great Sabry free kick and it rolls in front of the
feet of Egyptian #3 who had speculated for the opportunity. Only his attempt
goes wide.
halftime 0:0
A very good game. Senegal
once more superstrong, more and more dominating the match, but with some
weak spots as well. Egypt very solid and smart in spotting those weaknesses.
2nd half
-Senegal bring on a substitute
(#14)
-('48) Egypt: a long range
#15 free kick is deflected by the wall for a corner
-('48) the corner is
played short, back outside, a cross flies in, and #18 Ahmed Hossam, notz
tightly marked, heads it into the net - 1:0
-Egypt, as often,
have prepared set pieces very well in practice it seems
-('50) Senegal attempt,
across the bar
-('53) Senegal create a
dangerous situation in the Egyptian penalty area, but it is cleared by
defefence
-('57) Senegal pressuring,
and Egypt with counterattacks: Sabry across the the bar
-('59) Sabry ignites another
dangerous attack
-('64) a crwoded Egyptian
defence prevents a Senegalese header after a corner from crossing the line
-('71) Egypt with a half
chance after a quick long throw in, possible a practised situation, too
-('73) Senegal: free kick
from the left hand side, dangerously on the goal, a defender steps in and
deflects it for a corner
-('73) Senegal: the corner
produces a situation with the keeper out of the play and El Hadji Diouf
firing on the goal where four defenders stand on the line and obstruct
the way into the net
-('74) Senegal: the next
thrilling situation, an acrobatic shot by El Hadj Diouf and a giant save
by the Egyoptian keeper
-somebody had thrown
a second ball on thefield, possibkly in an unfair attempt to stop the dangerous
situation, the referee goes behind the goal and somebody who rather
looks like a fan gets kicked out of the inner area, if there is a connection
remains unclear
-('78) Egypt counter attack:
Sabry fires across the goal
-Senegal have been fighting
for every ball throughout the match
-('81) Senegal: another
dangerous ball, but offside
-('85) Egypt: #12 Barakat
has an opportunity after a counter attack but only hits the keeper with
his shot
-('87) Senegal: dangerous
20 meter shot by El Hadj Diouf, but it misses the goal by centimeters
-('88) another attempt,
this time by Fadiga rolls wide by a close margin at the other goal post
-('injury time) one linesmen
is making some dubious decisions in favour of the Egyptians, stopping the
last two Sengalese attacks
final score 1:0
credit to Egypt who have
defeated a very strong Senegalese team by a very good, concentrated, and
errorfree performance, well prepared for every set piece situation and
eventually exploiting the few leaks in the Lions defence. Senegal with
another impressing performance, but ill luck is mounting for them after
three similarly strong performances at Algeria, Morocco (the goal that
was not given), and Egypt have only brought two points. They are the first
of the three candidates to have become defeated now. |
