the final:
Feb 10 1605 GMT
Senegal - Cameroon 0:0 (end of
extra-time) penalties: 2:3
Cameroon are African
Champions
Before the match:
Two teams on the way to
make history. Senegal with their first ever appearance in a Nations Cup
final and Cameroon with an unprecedented run of 5 victories without concedeing
a goal and the opportunity to be the first African team to defend the title
since almost fourty years ago when the tournament was still played with
only 6 teams.
With Cameroon and Senegal
the two teams are in the final who looked the strongest in one to one challenges,
had a well suited game for the bumpy pitches and who had the most 'modern'
approach. While the (potentially) most creative teams like Côte d'ivoire
or Nigeria like the short passing North African football failed to make
the final, Cameroon and Senegal convinced by their thrength and determination.
Other teams crowded their
defences but did not regularly attack opponents deep in their own half.
Because of the West African heat this seemed to be a good advice at least
to conserve power for a possible semi-final or final. But Senegal proved
that their fighting approach suited them well: they did not have to switch
their game when receiving a setback, they were able to continue with their
style throughout the see saw semi-final against Nigeria.
Cameroon on the other hand
managed to find a perfect way to come up with dangerous pressing in doses,
switching tempo during the matches. Against Senegal their build up will
come under pressure early for a first time really after they achieved to
win the midfield against Mali. Anyway they remain favorites.
They will be well prepared
against Senegals technique to play out corner and free kicks around the
penalty area to become dangerous on set pieces.
odds:

halftime 0:0
An exciting match on a very
high level. Senegal began very strong but with high expenditures for a
team that had to go 120 minutes and a day rest less than their opponents.
Logically Cameroon gained momentum towards the end of the half.
2nd half:
-('46) Senegal signal they
want to continue attacking: #14 Moussa Ndiaye in for #22 Makhtar Ndiaye

keeper Alioum perfectly intercepts a free kick cross
-('51) Cameroon: Ndiefi
fires across the bar from 18 meters
-Cameroon with some more
control of the tempo early in this second half. They will surely speculate

themselves to sleep as they lose the ball on a casual pass deep inside

run by Coly stopped at the edge of the penalty area on the verge to a foul

yellow for a dangerous foul
-the challenges have
got even more intense and now a few times have gone a little too far. It
can not be already tiredness?
-('66) Senegal: free kick
for Diouf but into the wall
-('67) Cameroon answer immediately.
Log cross on Ndiefi but Omar Daf puts his body in between. The ensuing
corner sees a header by Kalla which is saved by Sylva. Kalla is injured
when his clashed with the one of a Senegalese defender and has to be treated.
-the match isnot as exciting
as in the first half. Both teams now that who will score first might be
the winners

up Ndiefi by his head and Ndiefi is through, fires from 14 meters half
right a diagonal shot against the goalpost of the far corner

cross defended by Mouss Ndiaye, but the ensuing corner finds a badly marked
Foe who heads from 15 meters into the crowd in front of the goal where
Senegal can defend it at last
-Cameroon have imposed
their rhythm on the match. Senegal attacks have become seldom
-('79) just saying this:
golden counter opportunity for Senegal 3 vs. 2 but Fadiga needs to long
to get the ball under control after he had been played free

penalty shoot-out: 2:3
No team deserved to lose
in regulation but no player deserved the punishment to fail in a penalty
shoot-out. Cameroon, without conceding a goal in the entire tournament,
win a second consecutive Nations Cup on penalties. Senegalese players cry.
