Especially in the first half the match suffered from the rainy and windy conditionsand many errors marred the match. Both teams with an approach to play combination game, the Egyptians players in their positions widespread across the width of the field. Al Ahly scored an early lead (6th, Said Mohamed) which was equalised in the 38th minute by a spectacular lop from Tony Alegbe with the back to the goal over the goalkeeper that had been out of the goal.

In the second half Shooting Stars completely dominated the match and created several exciting scenes in front of the Al  Ahly goal. The 2:1 in the 70th minute (scorer: Hassan Santos) was the eventual consequence. But the Nigerians defence which weeknesses had been exposed before by the few counter attempts of Al Ahly, easily gave away the lead against the skillful Egyptians who scored in the 74th (Mohamed Gouda) and later even scored the 3:2 winner by a skillful goal by Walid Salah. the probably injured Hossam Hassan did not play. Shooting Stars hit the goalpost a couple of times in a match that looked much better in the second half despite the conditions.
